The trail climbed steady, mostly on stone steps, through farm fields, and then through forest.


There are little shrines scattered through the woods everywhere in China.

This is the “dining room” of the “restaurant” at the temple. Fay, Xiaoping, and I, along with the seven students, sat at the table in the foreground. You can just make out the big rice bucket with the basket lid in the background. Like many restaurants, it was full and free for the taking.


This and the following pictures were all taken from the mountain top. In this picture you can see most of the city of Ya’an.


Rape seed is cultivated in terraced fields all over the valley.
